    アイルランド出身のイギリスの作曲家。ケンブリッジ、ライプツィヒ、ベルリンに学んだ後、1883-1924年に英国王立音楽大学作曲科教授、1887-1924年にケンブリッジ大学音楽部教授。オペラ8作、交響曲7曲など多くの作品を残している。このアンセムは1905年に作曲された「3つの無伴奏モテット」作品38の１番目の曲です。

    Justorum animae in manu Dei sunt, et non tanget illos tormentum malitiae. Visi sunt oculis insipientium mori, illi autem sunt in pace.The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and the torment of malice shall not touch them; in the sight of the unwise they seemed to die, but they are in peace.
